But they're man-made rights, and there is already a mechanism to edit the text in which they're found. It's not set in stone.

Absolutely none of my rights are man-made. All my rights are given to me by God my Creator and cannot be taken by anyone

What about people who don't believe in god? What about other countries that ban guns? Does god not exist there?

Call them “natural rights” as our Founders and enlightenment philosophers did. The point is, the rights in the Bill of Rights are not bequeathed by the government. If they were, they wouldn’t be “rights.” The Bill of Rights is meant to protect rights *all* people have at birth.

I’m sorry, but that’s incorrect. The government absolutely bequeaths those rights through the Constitution. If those rights were “natural” they would exist in other countries that have dissimilar gun laws (ie they don’t worship guns like we do here), which they clearly do not.

Other governments violate people’s rights, but that doesn’t mean the people don’t have those rights. They’re just being violated. *All* living things have a right to defend themselves, their families and communities from those who would harm them. No exceptions.

Now you're conflating rights granted by the BoR with rights granted by statute/common law, but in either event they are only rights because the people - through the government - have decided those are rights.

You either ignored or didn’t understand what I just told you. Human rights cannot be granted or taken away. They can only be respected or violated. Rights:

Your point - such as it was - wasn’t difficult to grasp, we’re just talking past each other. And I simply disagree with you that the right to bear arms is an unfettered “God-given” or “natural” (your choice - but the idea that it is God-given is particularly offensive) right.

But as I suspect you disagree, and from our discourse it doesn’t seem like you are willing to consider any alternatives, I will respectfully bow out of this conversation.pic.twitter.com/BZ1iEwhfCf

The Founders of this country, inspired by enlightenment philosophers before them, based our government on this belief in natural, inalienable rights. Without that belief, and that Bill of Rights securing those rights, we wouldn’t be able to have this conversation.
