Absolutely none of my rights are man-made. All my rights are given to me by God my Creator and cannot be taken by anyone

What about people who don't believe in god? What about other countries that ban guns? Does god not exist there?

Call them “natural rights” as our Founders and enlightenment philosophers did. The point is, the rights in the Bill of Rights are not bequeathed by the government. If they were, they wouldn’t be “rights.” The Bill of Rights is meant to protect rights *all* people have at birth.

And for the record, I believe Michael means well because I believe he’s a good person. Same with Johnny, except I actually know the guy, so my belief is a bit stronger. I’d really appreciate it if we could stop polarizing this conversation.

*Everyone* has compassion for these kids, and they should *never* be put in a situation like they have been. We’re failing as a society to protect them, and it’s largely *because of* this polarization.

People who are comfortable with guns simply react differently to these sorts of events than people who are not comfortable with guns. And that’s not going to change. But we *can* decide as a society to presume the “other side” is not stupid or evil. Because they’re not.

In the end, we all want the same things - to stop these mass shootings - so once we start at where we agree, we should be able to agree on cogent solutions. But if the goal isn’t “stop mass shootings” and is instead “get rid of guns” we will *never* come to agreement.

What would be the point of getting rid of guns other than stopping shootings, mass or otherwise?

You can’t rid society of anything for which there is a market. If you could, we wouldn’t have cocaine, prostitution, gambling... If there’s a market, it will always be served by somebody. You can kill the gun market, but only through making people not want guns in the 1st place.

It could. But we’re certainly a long, long way away from such a thing.
