The civil rights movement directly challenged white supremacy, and no one is calling that an example of mistaken strategy. The gay rights movement insisted that out and proud was the only way to survive. Both direct challenges to the status quo that were highly successful.

Fighting white supremacy didn’t create more white supremacists. Being openly gay didn’t cause more people to hate gays. Those are bad analogies.

Gun ownership in this country--per capita--has actually gone DOWN since the advent of the gun control movement.
