Well it's useful hindsight, but ultimately doesn't dissuade the Rogan allusions in that they both tend to enjoy catering to the right's outrage against left, while only occasionally doing the odd finger wagging at the right. Bizarre equivalencies/lack of perspective constantly.

I think that statement gets to the heart of it tbh: prominent figures who talk a lot about politics online are always going to get shit for it, I value those who can sift through it all & not let it affect the overall shape or direction of their work. Perspective is so key.

I'm all for exploring things from all sides but the trap of the right is that they're more rewarding, they craft an almost pavlovian response for people. Sam just seemed prone to the effect over time, even if it didn't fundamentally change his ethos. That's why I had to drop out.

Yeah, I understand feeling that way, it's why I followed him in the first place. I've spent a fair amount of time contemplating how the rising popularity of atheism seemed to cross-pollinate quite a bit with libertarianism in the late 00's/early 10's... (apols for tweet storm)

Mostly because it affected me in that way; I'm still an atheist but am disgusted by libertarian rhetoric. & I've observed that people of similar persuasions seem very prone to lacking empathy from their disgust with religion. The good is tainted by the bad, etc.

Sam is focused on his perception of a peer's suffering & struggles to compare it to actual rampant racism. He convinces himself it's important because science, but he can't see the forest through the trees. He can't keep the perspective in check of what matters, buys the hysteria

I don’t understand this “catering to the right” accusation against Joe Rogan. Because he hunts? Or has firearms? Libertarianism as a philosophy (*not* the party) is also not a problem. It’s simply the idea that people have control over government rather than the opposite.

Well, I can’t handle listening to Shapiro. His voice alone, much less the content. So I wouldn’t know. I also can’t remember hearing him say anything I disagreed with about the left. He’s always come across as very fair to me.
