You disagree with the people who intentionally framed this government as a republic rather than a democracy. So, ok. Feel free. But remember you’re only free because your rights are protected. And your rights are protected because this is a republic, not a democracy.

That’s not what he’s saying. He’s saying the minority have the same rights as the majority and thus cannot have their rights violated by said majority. It’s plain English.
