You sound like someone who is using themselves as a template meaning you think the majority must be ruled over because it's what you would do. If you don't have faith that the majority aren't sociopaths or psychopaths I think you're proving my point.

I'll have to take your lack of response as a vivid example of how you perceive the majority & why you feel the minority must be protected from perceived ignorant choices. I can only assume you feel is you. I grew up around people who feel this is how it should be. I cannot agree

You disagree with the people who intentionally framed this government as a republic rather than a democracy. So, ok. Feel free. But remember you’re only free because your rights are protected. And your rights are protected because this is a republic, not a democracy.
