The reality is that you need to get rid of the guns. Yes, you have a lot of guns, but a total ban and also incentives to hand in weapons, plus strict punishment for those in possession of weapons, will work. It might take 10 years, maybe even 50. But in the end, they'll be gone.
Banning guns hasn’t worked in any country where there’s a large market for guns. Australia today has more guns than they did before the “ban”. They still don’t have high gun crime because of socioeconomics. This is how bans work on any good or service with a strong market:pic.twitter.com/ucaWq1GSJy

And there will never be a “last generation” of gun owners until after the government relinquishes its own. You’re a magical thinker. Guns don’t biodegrade, and you can’t uninvent them. People have been building their own guns now for many years. Look: http://ghostgunner.net

Frankly, you’re not dealing in the real world. 3D printers are already available to print metal. Plans for guns are already online. You can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube. If you want a safer society, that comes through socioeconomics, not disarmament by government force.
