I'm sure it's comforting to the kids that had to huddle in closets and pray they didn't get killed that it's not technically called an assault rifle

Yeah, I saw the video of the children screaming and crying while he shot children in a neighboring classroom, they didn't really seem to care.

These kids being killed is the most horrific direct act imaginable in our country. But understanding guns, & gun owners, *is* necessary if you want to address the *reality* of this problem as opposed to just passing legislation designed to make people *feel* safer. Because kids also won’t care if the gun being used to kill them is made of wood, or not. And they won’t care if the gun being used to kill them is legal, or not. If we really want to address this, we need to protect the kids directly and fix our *society*. 2/

Which means yes, we need universal background checks. But they won’t help if we don’t have mental-health diagnoses. And we won’t get those without universal healthcare and a rebuilding of our nation’s mental-health infrastructure, defunded by Reagan in 1984. 3/

We also need to understand that prohibition of any good or service for which there’s a strong enough market never works. Alcohol, illicit drugs, prostitution... Guns. Especially in a nation with over 320 million of them *unregistered* in circulation. It’s a huge supply. 4/

We have about 550 TIMES as many guns here as Australia got rid of (600,000). They’re not biodegradable. They aren’t going anywhere. So, as Alinsky said, we need to deal in the world as it is, not as we wish it were. These kids deserve substantive fixes, not hot air. 5/5
