Would the 14th amendment allow states to restrict freedom of speech, religious freedom, your right to trial, etc?

You are. The 14th was designed to *prevent* states from denying constitutional rights.

There are no gun laws in the books anywhere that would’ve prevented him from buying the firearm due to mental illness unless he was deemed violent by his psychiatrist *and* reported into the system as such. He wasn’t. The FBI could’ve stopped him but “didn’t follow protocol.”

No gun laws in the books anywhere is the problem. Pass the law. If you can ban lawn darts, I'm sure someone somewhere can come up with a law that addresses this.
