To put gun ownership in perspective: There are 33,000 gun deaths per year here (approx), and about 2/3 are suicides and 1/3 homicides. ALL of them are tragic. All of them. But think about this: 100 million gun owners here. 1% of that is 1 million.....
Lead was removed from gasoline in 1990 by the EPA. It's also been systematically removed from pipes, paint, and as many other environmental areas as possible. But the lead in gasoline was in the air. People breathed it in. It led to psychosis.

There have also been updates in how policing is done, but I'm not enough of an expert on that to explain it. Something about patrolling certain areas where crime is more likely to happen, statistically. I believe lead was removed all around the world around the same time.

That's why crime has dropped. And that's why I firmly believe the answer to gun crime here is fixing our society, not trying to get rid of guns. And this is besides the point that I don't believe we *can* get rid of the guns. In a nutshell.
