I agree. It seems like he's trying to be chivalrous, though. I've often wondered if chvalry in and of itself is incompatible with equality for women. Is it?

No. I can hold a door for a person without it needing to be seen as anything other than a simple act of kindness. Chivalry, like politeness, is not a statement about the recipient's abilities.
