Because it happens all the time! How do you think the ranks of the alt-right have grown? They are actively targeting and converting people. And no, they won't "turn" overnight, but it will initiate or hasten the process.

They're targeting and converting people outside of the realm of true public debate. Basically, in the dark, just like the KKK did 100 years ago. "Sunlight is the best disinfectant."

Absolutely. But, from my view, that involves exposing them. Telling people what they do. Not debating them. I'm not advocating pretending like they don't exist.

The public reacts poorly to one-sided things like that. And it allows the racists to play victim. We aren't going to agree, apparently. But I will maintain there's only one way to defeat it, and that is through open dialog.

I don't think we will agree. I'm basing my argument on my knowledge of how behaviors and beliefs change. And I don't think what you are reasoning is backed up by peer reviewed-evidence.

Can you show me peer-reviewed science that shows that bad ideas take hold *more* when openly and publicly debated?

The video I shared highlights many of the shortcomings with this... different cognitive biases are at play. But if you have access, I suggest looking for articles on google scholar that examine how opinions are changed on political issues. There are many articles.
