We still need pharmaceutical companies to invest to find new medicines/ways to heal us. In theory it's possible to nationalize those as well, but then there is an effeciency concern.
About half of all pharmaceutical R&D is covered by taxpayers already through the Orphan Drug Act. And even more is paid through charitable foundations.
