It would probably work if it wasn't so easy for companies to get in a dominant position. But I don't think that's where the debate is. Do you really want to trade lives for money? Ideally, health shouldn't be related to money at all...

We still need pharmaceutical companies to invest to find new medicines/ways to heal us. In theory it's possible to nationalize those as well, but then there is an effeciency concern.
