Monopolies abound, either directly or through collusion and barriers to entry. Amazon, Google, Facebook, Big Oil, Big Pharma, banking, airlines... We are "the market." Companies are the "marketplace" but we, the people, are "the market." 1/
We misuse "free market" to mean "laissez faire", but they aren't the same things. For it to be an actual "free market" we must be able to voluntarily enter and leave the marketplace at will. When we can't do that, we are a captive market. 2/

And in captive markets, you get price-gouging because the market has no choice but to buy. Get cancer, or get in an accident, you can't choose the cost of your treatment. You're a captive market, the hospital/pharmaceutical company, etc, sets the cost, and you pay, or you die 3/

True free markets work fantastically. We don't have those with healthcare, oil, electricity, internet, and many other things. And that needs to be addressed. "Give me the money I want or else you die" is theft, not business. 4/4
