Sorry Steve. This is way wrong. Background checks on every gun sale, keeping guns away from domestic abuser and criminals, and keeping guns out of schools isn’t restricting anyone’s rights. That’s a @NRA talking point.https://twitter.com/realstevecox/status/931337918341197825 …

W odpowiedzi do @shannonrwatts @NRA
Steve’s argument isn’t very well thought through. Do seatbelt laws restrict my ability to drive? No. Does having to show ID restrict my ability to buy alcohol? No. And does having to pay a parade fee restrict my right to free speech or assembly? No.

That last one is actually a yes.

Time, place, and manner restrictions. And you’re wrong again, Steve. If I want to use the streets I should pay for the privilege. If I want to assemble and speak somewhere else that doesn’t burden law enforcement, traffic, freedom of movement, I’m welcome to, with no fee.

Streets are paid for in tax money. Making someone pay extra to exercise their rights means poor people can't afford to utilize their own rights.

You know what else is paid for with tax money? Aircraft carriers. But I can’t hold a parade on one.

Strawman anybody?

If you’re suggesting aircraft carriers aren’t streets, then I understand your response. But it’s not a straw man argument. Both are paid for by tax money. Since you’re having trouble with that one, I also cannot have a parade on the highway. Time, place, manner.

Right to assembly and right to free speech are rights in public. The deck of an aircraft carrier is not "public" strictly speaking. Roads are. Sidewalks are. Thus: Strawman. Creating an easy argument that you can defeat rather than addressing actual points presented.

Well, now you’re changing your argument. But I’ll address this new one. A public library. A public beach. I do not have an unfettered “right” to occupy any public space in any time or manner I choose. I pay a park entry fee. I must wear clothes. I can’t block ingress.

Now all you're doing is citing constitutional violations as if they justify violating people's rights.
