White people can understand and participate without being linked to any black people. Empathy exists.

Real relationships (all kinds) foster deep understanding & authentic participation.
That's true, but it's okay to give some white people credit for understanding just by walking a mile in another person's shoes, too.

In my experience, it doesn't happen all that often. Most white people need a close relationship to get it.
