The significance ascribed to race or religion can change a lot. I think as we go race will become more benign as an issue.

From what I've read, part of it is an evolutionary left-over from tribal days. Primitive groups can be extremely violent to outsiders.

Agreed. But what makes people assume other people in the same country, same language, etc., are "outsiders".
