The reason is that power can be employed in different ways, and when power blocks one avenue you need others.

What other avenues are there to defeat ideas other than through education?

Ideas don't exist by themselves. Ideas live in people who have goals, needs, social lives. Shame can work, but lots of things do.

Threat of violence can stop the pursuit of certain goals, even if the idea was never refuted. Ppl are self-interested, not logic machines.

Do you believe we can never live in a world where people don't divide themselves up by things like color, religion, etc?

A fundamental (physiological) characteristic of human perception is the awareness of differences. That will not change.
