But once they're in, how do you keep them from corporate interests? Politicians aren't inherently bad, it's power of the situation

Vote people in who have principles. Which likely means people who are independents.

Easy to say, but how to know who? I venture to say most voters don't follow vote records closely, but swayed by TV ads/portrayals

Then the problem isn't the Representatives, or the system. It's the voters.

I could see that. Not enough voter education. Everyone lectures to voters, but there's no education in that. I tune out when I get lectures.
