I look at my 3 children and constantly think how lucky they are to be growing up in this world. On a local level, the Brooklyn they know is sunshine and rainbows compared to the broken glass and cracked out one of my youth. They don't know a pre-Rudy city of crime. The thing with LA is that it's so spread out that it's possible not to *feel* the bad parts of it. In NYC we are so squished together that the super rich aren't sequestered from the problems--making them more likely to want them dealt with.

That's a good point. However, the homeless issue is beginning to spill into even the poshest of areas. It's becoming a noticeable problem in areas that it's never been in before. So maybe that's changing? I don't know.
