One significant step on Pinocchio (2022) is that we credit the animators right up front alongside the cast members- because they are. And we are touring w the puppets and Georgina Hayns to showcase the artistry that allows that performance.

Extremely hard to execute. Pure, masterly clockwork precision and a lot more complex than "seamed" shots or steadicam-to-crane "relay" shots. Baffling, virtuoso- but one of so, so many shots that make the camera "dance" with each musical number.

Late for dinner- but loved THE MENU (Mylod, 2022) cast beautifully- with three central performances I enjoyed tremendously. Its dark, dark sense of humor and looming menace were a delight. Ralph Fiennes, Nicholas Hoult and Anya Taylor-Joy drive it home.

BARRY was a beautiful experiment- bright, anarchic, bold- full of invention and messy humanity. And it was the heralding of Bill Hader’s talent as a director and guiding force. An articulate, brave and cultured filmmaker. S4, E3 had an iffy cameo- but, other than that…

A Quiet Place It's tense, scary, yes, but John Krasinski's storytelling is also classic, elegant, completely controlled. The cinematography by Charlotte Bruus Christensen superb and the Beltrami score, spot-on.
PARASITE- I have loved and admired Bong Joon Ho since MEMORIES OF MURDER and he surprises, delights and moves me, every single time. So, to say this is his best, means a lot to me. It is. A film full of sadness and wit and depth. Irreverent but compassionate. Amazing.

1) The opening shot suggests that earth (the shit-infested ground) and heaven (the plane) are irreconcilably far even if they are joined -momentarily- and revealed, by water (the reflection). All truths in ROMA are revealed by water.
