we can't continue believing this lie that our lives & cities are beholden to the authority of political decision makers. we must demand participatory budgeting now. PB says actually no city councillor you aren't the one most qualified to decide how to allocate public safety funds
folks most affected by policing are. Black, indigenous and otherwise marginalized folk have been alienated from opportunities to make decisions about our own communities' safety. but we don't have to wait until the next election, we can stand in our power right now.
through a participatory budgeting project in New York City, formerly incarcerated folks made decisions about re-entry funds. through a similar initiative in North Carolina, community members decided to spend $500,000 on upgrades to their recreation centres and bus shelters,
in Far Rockaway, residents decided to spend 1.86 million of city council money on upgrading their schools. #yeg we cannot simply hope #yegcc makes the right call. we must demand council #DefundThePolice & put their faith in those most affected to find solutions to public safety.
