Christians were apolitical and pacifist. The coming of catholic doctrines and the various state-religion structures wearing the toga of Christianity, messed things up. They weren't fighting for the faith directly, though forced conversions increased numbers

There was bro.. In the book of Acts for instance, Paul identified himself as a Jew when he was teaching, and identified himself as a Roman when he was arrested. That was just a few years after Christ. Roman citizenship was conferred on all freeborn

The Roman status was not even an issue, what was contentious was Jews vs Gentiles on the need for circumcision and pagan customs.
