There are 4 weeks to apply for the UCL Wellcome 4-year PhD programme in mental health (deadline 31 Jan). Many years ago I did a Wellcome 4-year PhD programme in neuroscience at UCL, and it was transformative and brilliant. This new programme is amazing:

The end of the year can only mean one thing - it's The Spike's review of the year! “2019: a lightly bamboozled review of the year in neuroscience” by me Includes a high concentration of skepticism

Check out our work on two hippocampal populations bidirectionally modulating PFC activity. We dissect their role within this circuit and during exploratory behaviour.

New preprint from the lab! A huge amount of work from showing how two different hippocampal to prefrontal circuits bidirectionally control exploration. Gene expression to behaviour and everything in between!

I love our co-op teammates! We work hard to design co-op experiences that give you important work (no toy tasks) & responsibilities, while providing the support needed for you to succeed. Happy to talk about this with anyone who's interested!

Spent the weekend patching human neocortical neurons with and Henrike Planert. Tissue sample came from a patient who received surgical treatment for temporal lobe epilepsy. ⚡️

Today, as most other days, some tweets announced cool papers, with links to a paywall. Most people won't be able to read these! Even though their taxes paid for the work. It's absurd. Can't wait for to kick in, even if Europe has to go it alone:

George W Bush bombed the Iraqi city of Fallujah with depleted uranium in 2004. Fifteen years later, Fallujah has the highest rate of birth defects in the world. Higher than Hiroshima and Nagasaki after the US dropped atom bombs on them.

Eye opening article on Elsevier. "Every time we pay a $3000 article processing charge, only $1800 supports the publishing process, while the remaining $1200 goes directly to Elsevier shareholders." They suggest you ask for $400/hr when Elsevier requests that you review a paper.
