Thread about a topic that keeps coming up recently: I've had loads of conversations with developers who believe that the way to battle declining sales and rising saturation, is to throw more time and money at development. I honestly couldn't disagree more with this sentiment.

Counter argument, with the giant growth in indie developers you do need something to set yourself apart, this can be through concept, vision, talent, execution but also effort, budget, etc.
-
but I would strongly argue that concept, vision, talent, execution etc are potentially free (i.e. based on you), whereas time, effort and budget are all elements that completely change the risk of a title, and a lot of the time have no basis on whether the final product is "good"

take all that cut scope content and put it in the sequel if the 1st game breaks even.

But Mike... half of these features have never been implemented anywhere before. It's going to change the way games are played forever. I've planned 8 months of development exclusive for [xyz] streaming platform. Your advice will ruin my game. I will release when ready!

What do you mean [xyz] streaming platform may not be valid in 2023. I got this!

Just get the bugs out and publish. Make sure you can add DLC down the road, if there is demand for it. Take a page from lean manufacturing, where inventory is a point of weakness, & it's best to maximize turnover.
