A not-so-new-or-original thought on changing our politics: A Thread 1/ People in rural Minnesota-especially farmers-are desperately hurting under Trump's economic policies. Farm foreclosures. Suicide. Conditions are increasingly desperate.
People of color in the Twin Cities are hurting desperately under Trump's xenophobia, increased racist &Islamophobic & antisemitic rhetoric and policies. Gun violence. Attacks on POCI, Muslims, and Jews have sky-rocketed under this president. Deportations. People are terrified. 2/
But to hear Trump and his ilk speak, Black folks on the North side *should* have disdain for the rural farmers. And rural farmers should be terrified of people of color in the cities-especially men-who "run around in gangs" and "harm *good* (read white) people." 3/
But here's the thing: When rural white Minnesota farmers are pitted against African American youth of color in North Minneapolis, who benefits? 4/
When people are divided from each other, who wins? Trump and greedy corporations who give neither a damn about the suffering of rural white farmers or urban kids of color. 5/
They profit off of our communal suffering. And nothing gets done with regard to effective farm policy, public education, immigration reform, addressing climate crisis, gun violence, raising minimum wage, stemming the cost of rising life saving drug costs (like insulin!), 6/x
creating affordable and quality health care, and public transportation. We must ALWAYS ask ourselves: Who profits from these campaigns of fear and mistrust? Who do they benefit? Certainly not urban folks or rural folks. 7/x
That's why it's our collective responsibility to rise above our fears and to DEMAND FROM EVERY SINGLE CANDIDATE FOR HIGHER OFFICE: WE ARE SICK AND TIRED OF DIVISION! WE ARE SICK AND TIRED OF YOU BLAMING OTHER PEOPLE FOR OUR COLLECTIVE PROBLEMS! 8/x
WHAT ARE YOUR PROPOSED SOLUTIONS TO MAKE LIFE BETTER FOR EVERY SINGLE HUMAN BEING IN THIS STATE, NO MATTER WHERE THEY LIVE, WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE, HOW THEY PRAY, OR WHAT THEY DO FOR WORK? 9/x
Fear and division keep the master rich and impervious. And the rest of us grow increasingly afraid, isolated, and unable to make the changes we need to live our lives. 10/x
Democracy demands we rise up, greater than fear, and elect leaders with a vision of unity and a policy platform rooted in human dignity and compassion for each other and the planet. 11/x
