The problem with the whole cultural appropriation argument is that its a "requires nuance and sensitivity" thing as opposed to an "absolute rules apply" thing. Its all messy grey area shit that people hate because it needs thinkings.

Maybe that's western individualism, in a way? The moment of choice, where you get to decide if you're a "good" or "bad" person, is often framed as being *before* you get called out, rather than after it, when you actually have enough information to make a good or bad decision.
