The problem with the whole cultural appropriation argument is that its a "requires nuance and sensitivity" thing as opposed to an "absolute rules apply" thing. Its all messy grey area shit that people hate because it needs thinkings.

I think the young lady with the prom dress is a good example of this. On the one hand, I do doubt she was trying to be racist. Based on her photos, she seemed like she wanted to do something a little different. But her response to criticism showed a certain lack of respect.

First she says she just loves Asian culture, but when it is pointed out to her that the dress she chose had important cultural significance, she was just like, "its just a dress". Well, do you respect the culture or not?
