Absolutely criminal that they are doing this.http://www.foxnews.com/auto/2018/03/20/after-uber-crash-arizona-dot-confirms-no-changes-to-self-driving-car-rules.html …

The question is if these cars are on average as safe or safer than cars driven by people. Deadly crashes will happen regardless. The issue is if these self-driving cars pose more of a threat.

I believe they will be better than human. Technology usually does that. I predict in the far future there will be such a gap that it will be an ethical question whether people should be allowed to drive cars

I doubt people will go for that. Self driving cars may be a dud. Best case is a fusion where car merely perfects and corrects human errors but doesn't take full control. Like some cars now automatically stop when you are about to crash

I agree. Overall all they are going to be a good thing. There are some ethical issues around how they should be programmed, but I think we really need them.

I think the real test will be with truckers & cab/uber etc drivers. There are already protests over the self-driving models. But if those industries adopt them they will be here to stay.

Yup. Haven't even gotten into the moral questions of how the cars will value life in rare instances when they have to make tough decisions. One of reasons I am reluctant to advocate fully automated cars

Also I don't think people will want to give up ability to drive

Yeah I think people not wanting to give up driving with be a bit of an issue, less so inside cities. The only good work around I've thought of for the moral question is to test what the average person would do in that situation & then make all cars do the same.

But idk if there's a good answer to that question. Idk how I would feel knowing that my car would kill people to up the chances of me surviving.

I've seen ads where cars stop when you are about to crash. Maybe best we can hope for is technology minimizing human error without taking over fully.
