Claiming incompetence (which is problematic in and of itself, I mean, what actually makes a good movie? Good luck.) Is not a fair deflection from analysis because analysis is not about quality, it's about meaning, which regardless of purpose exists in all artistic media.

I mean, I'm not big on the Hobbit movies as it stands, but this strange vitriol on my feed for brief, valid analysis is goofy. It's helpful towards the conversation of what these things actually mean to us. The conversation is helpful, shutting it down and shaming it is not.

I'm not trying to shut down any conversation. My problem is that Harris always implies intent. Saying that they point out problems with the franchise at large is a good point, but that doesn't make them good on their own. I think this sums up my problemhttps://twitter.com/RationalDis/status/963693583613165568 …

he's like "Hey look! These films are worse than these other films that I didn't like & because the Hobbit takes the problems of TLOTR and makes them worse it's like they are a commentary of how bad the, less bad, problems of TLOTR is! And that makes them good!" It's dumb

I think the same goes for his takes on the Prequels. They did a lot of interesting things, I think Harris gives Lucus too much credit, but that's beside the point. My problem is that he ignores that they are failed films that did some interesting things.

At the end of the day, it's all subjective if these are "good" or "bad" films, but I feel like he cherry picks a few good elements, but ignores the films as a whole.

I mean, he implies no intent in his statements. He claims the Hobbit films function as a criticism of LOTR, not that this was somehow the intended purpose of the trilogy.

He also doesn't say the movies are good. Because that is irrelevant to the purpose of analysis. Your statements reduce his argument to him claiming that these were intentional choices and make the film good. Neither are the point.

Idk his next two tweets say that it is about "the hobbit' being consumed wholesale and digested by, the Lord of the Rings Extended Universe™" which is a gripe that he had with the books.https://twitter.com/Hbomberguy/status/963675745519390720 …

https://twitter.com/YangWenli767/status/963674677775421440 … You're thinking about it in terms of straight adaptation. The Hobbit addresses wider notions than one book from 1937. More accurately, it depicts the story of 'the hobbit' being consumed wholesale, and digested by, the Lord of the Rings Extended Universe™

I mean, I'm not here to defend his analysis. I'm not certain what my views are yet, and I think the discussion around this could be really interesting and helpful. But I had to challenge the reductionist approach you were taking with the conversation.

Okay, that's fair. I could have been more clear. I think that Harris has interesting takes. He just rubs me the wrong way when he is talking about them. Maybe that's more my problem than his🤷‍♂️

I would really encourage you to read books like: The Mechanical Bride, In the Blink of an Eye, Ways of Seeing, The Medium is the Massage, to enhance the way you read these situations. They changed my life.
