Oh, the horror! A painting is temporarily being taken down to promote a conversation about how women are portrayed in art. 🙄pic.twitter.com/lv9l4T9oD0

I don't think John William Waterhouse ever wanted to provoke conversation. He wanted to paint a mythological story because it's interesting. It's really unrational and rude to just lash out at his art.

Lol what? 1. Go read Death of the Author. 2. How is temporarily removing a work "lashing out at" it?

Great rational case made for why that painting should be taken down!

Because art isn't meant to provoke discussion of ideas????

If they genuinely wanted to promote conversation they should've asked what people thought about the painting before taking it down. The whole sparking conversation narrative was clearly just an excuse for them to flex their ideological preconceptions

So why take down a painting of a teenage boy being kidnapped and raped by magical female nymphs when you want to highlight the struggles of women. Clearly the guy is the one in trouble there

Yes it was supposed to provoke discussion which is what we're doing here. I know the PreRaphaelite painting by Waterhouse. I did a copy/study of it. I also know that PreRaphaelite Brotherhood Movement took pains to discredit female artists although good enough to use as "muses"pic.twitter.com/KHkAz2fiFz

Wow I didn't know that(my art history isn't very good), but I do know that most paintings are done through the male gaze.

THANK YOU for actually reading the articles. Interesting how both the museum & the car org CHOSE to use the me too trend to generate publicity, yet the post & most comments make it sound like it was the me too's idea. One might think that they don't even care about the truth.🤔
