Anakin is arguably sympathetic in episode l, but he loses all sympathy in ll & lll. There was no time to grow to like him. He's a selfish ass who slaughters an entire village of Sand People in episode ll, arguably the first time his character even matters to the story.

I agree that you pointed out the best theme that could possibly be pulled out of the prequels, but does that mean that it was done well? I think it's more a matter of interesting ideas poorly executed. That puts it closer to a good bad movie than a legit good trilogy.
