Okay, so... theoretically they should fell no pain. However, technically speaking, there have been some studies to suggest they might. I'm highly skeptical, but it's talked about in A Language Older Than Words by Derrick Jensen.

I've read somewhere that trees and grass signal to the surrounding plants that a plant near them is being cut, but afiak this doesn't mean they feel pain. They can just recognize when something is going on.

He is quoting a "study" done by Ikea as an advertising gimmick that had a sample size of 2 plants.

Does Sargon know what parts of the plant we eat? Like the part we eat is usually made edible by the plant on purpose so it can spread it's seeds etc. While this isn't the case 100% of time most of the plantmatter we consume is made edible on purpose by the plant..

The study for this remains elusive. Of course, Sargon wouldn't understand that.
