true, social workers are known for their power trips where they unload a full magazine of hollow points into the faces of people waiting in line to get food stampshttps://twitter.com/AshBCoffin/status/1272228490696417290 …

I didn’t hear her saying cops and social workers are the same. I heard her saying poor people have reasons to distrust social workers....and they do. Often the only MSW they’ve met is the one taking away their kid or pathologizing their race/SES.
-
The social workers I know all seem truly committed to anti-oppressive practice, but there’s still the darker side of the profession and its history to grapple with.

Black people are three times more likely to be sectioned in mental institutions. There are about 8,000 incidents a year where people in mental institutions are restrained in ways similar to arrests. In one hospital in London alone they had ten deaths in one year from restraints.
-
Black people are disproportionately killed in these institutions. They’re the carceral wing of social work.

"saying that their power trips are the same as armed police" Am I seeing a different tweet? Where exactly did she say or imply this? You're arguing with a strawman.

Honestly, outside of a small percentage of people I don't think people want to literally replace cops with social workers, they want for cops to have a range of skills, many of which include the sorts of social techniques & problem resolution that social workers ideally should —

— possess. I don't have a prob with Ash, but the second tweet, where she talks about 'every social worker she's ever met' & goes off on some individual and her whale music makes it sound like she's cherry-picking hard & her view is every bit as narrow as the one she's mocking

Its all part of the same thing though and if we replace the current system of police with a newly empowered bunch of social workers with the same internalized racism backed by the same state racism we’re going to just get more black people being abused but, a bit differently
