Yes, according to my ethical philosophy they were/are. No one is saying that the State doesn't do bad shit. Just that it's how rights are protected & enforced on a mass scale. Black people weren't going to end slavery without a State backing them.

So every group has to constantly fight on it's own to protect their rights? Without a State everyone is on their own. Again, my point is that a monopoly of violence is the only way rights are actually protected & enforced in a productive manner.
