if sanders loses the nomination legit, vote for whoever won it in the general. but if they cheat him out of the nomination, endorsing that with a vote is worse than trump

This is a really disappointing sentiment. A trans student in my city lost his ROTC scholarship due to the military ban and had to drop out because he couldn’t afford college otherwise. The truth is not voting for whoever gets the nomination helps Trump, which hurts trans people.

A trans friend told me lately that voting for someone who will do nothing for trans people, and thereby signalling that you will continue to vote for people who will do nothing for trans people in future elections, is far worse than not voting. How would you change their mind?

Because not voting against someone who will actively hurt Trans people is the worst option

As a trans person, I can say that in solidified states that will only go blue or red, a symbolic vote should only go to a candidate like Bernie. If it won't matter, why simply boost the popular vote for a candidate you hate? It's sad to say it like that but its true...

Like I still think those in swing states should vote for any dem against Trump, but at some point it starts to feel like we're being held at gunpoint by the democratic party, and the poor keep getting stepped on. We don't know what to do?

Sure, if you're not in a swing state there is more of an argument, but there are more things to vote on than just the president. Also, just not voting isn't that useful. Votes also effect local politics in a lot of ways.
