It's like people have forgotten that anecdotes are how you FRAME a story, but are NOT evidence in and of itself. Reminds me of an article I read where the author claimed everyone is super kinky these days because one friend googled BDSM and another watched tentacle hentai

Like I get that it's to humanize the subject & make people emotionally invested, but I fucking hate it lol

Maybe it's because I've dipped my toes in there before, but I don't mind them. A big part of news writing is hooking a reader who may not actually care about the story you're presenting, and those anecdotes are a good method for doing that. Also, the perspective can be helpful.

Yeah, that's true. I definitely understand why they do it, it's probably a good thing to humanize a story & get people emotionally invested, but I hate it lol

I used to work as a full-time journalist and I typically condensed anecdotes or avoided them altogether when possible. I can't say the same for most journalists. It can be done really well (I knew some folks who knew how to do it well). It just typically isn't.

I just read an article titled "Video games can't teach empathy" which proceeded to give evidence that they can teach empathy, but instead decided to frame the article from one dev's point of view.
