Not that I spected the comparition to be fair hosted on a vendor page. You mentioning Rancher 2.3 but comparing with OpenShift 3. The openshift-ansible playbooks are slow and painful to run. The current OpenShift 4 is operator based and a complet different story.

One OpenShift customer reported a recent PoC with 4.2 version took 3 weeks in their complex environment while Rancher finalised within the same day

it's really two different concepts of kubernetes platform: one integrated, strong concept/opinions, coherent and developer sugar added - the other cluster management, open, relatively flexible and easier to bend to your liking. it's a question of preference in the end.

In a perfect world K8s never fails, but I have seen OpenShift and Rancher failing during upgrade. I see Rancher as a lightwight solution for organisations hosting K8s internaly (shared root org) and OpenShift for service providers and Enterprises like to "configure everything".

I am dedicating this article to the professionals whose technical preference was
#Rancher but their company preferred to move with#OpenShift because of non-technical reasons. You know who you are! Yeah that's you!

we have both platforms used & in terms of coherence, thought-out-ness, integration and polish of features okd felt much better. rancher more open and (somewhat) flexible but also rougher on the edges. installation the same. okd is essentially just more "opinionated".

I see a big benefit of having a cluster based operation, than a nested operation from a management cluster. When will you do maintenance of the Rancher mgmt cluster, with a huge different customers having near 24h SLAs. It does feel like the pain of Active Directory subdomains.
