Been a long, tiring, fulfilling reporting trip to Saudi Arabia the past several days. Was just given some amazing fresh mint tea before we go live on Stream about our Saudi naval embed to Port Sudan. 10 hours there across the Red Sea, 10 hours back to here in Jeddah. 🇸🇦

Reefan, 13 years old, waited for four days with her family for a ship to arrive in Port Sudan, fleeing deadly violence. “I feel scared and excited at the same time,” she told CBS News — but added that she is looking forward to returning to the U.S., where it is “safer.”

More than 100 U.S. citizens are now safe from violence in Sudan, after traveling for 12 hours aboard a U.S. Navy ship. Many more are waiting to be rescued — and at least two who were hoping to flee have been killed in the fighting that has been rocking the country for weeks.

Evacuees start to disembark. We spoke to the one sole American on board who’s also a dual Sudanese national. He told us he got in touch with the U.S. embassy who directed him to go to Port Sudan where he was told to board this ship out.

#update Look. One of those two ships we were told about has docked. Just before 2pm. A smaller one, some 50 people on board. Mostly Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, one American. I’m told the journey was ~8 hours. But now there’s uncertainty even if or when another boat is coming today.

A fun look back 70 years ago to the #coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. It served as a battleground for the U.S.’ then very young broadcast networks to be the first to show the event to the country. It involved CBS, NBC, ABC - and even the Canadians! Here’s our report. 👇
