Details of Ophelia (1851-52) by John Everett Millais. 🌿🎨🌹 Every plant depicted, from the purple loosestrife to the wild roses, is the product of three months of painstaking observation at the banks of the Hogsmill River in Surrey.

Just heard on say something like “while in power the collapse of a regime seems inconceivable. After the collapse, it appears inevitable.” It’s so true &exactly what makes learning history so different than living through it. Nothing seems as shocking as it was.

There are many Cornish myths surrounding Logan stones (rocking stones). This one, near Nancledra, reputedly only rocks at midnight and was believed to cure children of rickets. It was also said to be a meeting place for witches who flew to it on ragwort stems 🧙‍♀️

Some of my favourite has a childlike simplicity — yet is wonderfully accomplished. This fabulous charcoal horse from Tito Bustillo Cave in Asturias, Spain, was drawn in the Magdalenian ~17,000-12,000 years ago. Image: World Heritage Photos

Occupied until the 12th c. CE, Castellum Tidditanorum (, ) offers a panorama of various cultures—Berber, Punic, Roman, Byzantine, Arab—in North African antiquity. Though less famous than sites like Djémila and Timgad, it is in many ways no less impressive.

Spitzer's Final Look 👁️ On its last day of science ops, the telescope's final observation measured our solar systems's dust, and then made a vital calibration measurement by closing a shutter that had been open since launch.
