In industry, I was taught that the magnetic field is an unfortunate academic tool that does not actually exist in nature. A useful tidbit that most people aren't exposed to, that makes this phenomenon easier to comprehend.

Similar can be achieved via donut/washer shaped magnets aligned next to each other, having an effect on the opposing donut/washer magnet.
