Now imagine the vortices of an A380 and it is clear why there has to be a gap after wide body aircraft landing and departing.

All the energy that goes into continually spinning the air is lost to the aircraft all the while consuming fuel. Observing wingtips of birds, an aero engineer wondered why the feathers flaired. He learned it reduces the vorticies. And that's why modern aircraft now have winglets.

Old and about as powerful as they get to the point they could still tangle with early jets. They may be obsolete now but you can't beat the raw power and awesome factor of some of those old warbirds.
