James Burke had only one chance to nail this scene. A clip from the 1978 BBC television show Connections, season 1, episode 8, “Eat, Drink, and Be Merry” which could be considered the best timed shot in television history [video: buff.ly/2Curomg]

Connections was the best science show ever.. the sheer simplicity and beauty of what James did, to make science so relatable.. was amazing.

Doesn't the launch happen at the end of a countdown? If he listened to that (or could see a display showing it), then the perfect timing is not that hard.

The whole clip is much longer and he spends most of it walking toward the rocket. To get the timing perfect would have been extremely hard.

I read somewhere that he had a countdown clock next to the camera so he could keep an eye on the timing.
