It seems to only appear zigzag if the colour changes at the peak and trough. Maybe compounded by being beside the same curve that is alternating colour otherwise? Less strong but it happens a bit over white and black for me, too.

The lines that “stay curved” are toned naturally for curves (convex lit, concave shaded). The ones that appear angular are toned weirdly for curves, but naturally for peaks (upslope lit, downslope shaded) because the tonal change is at the peak & trough, not partway through.

if you download the image and zoom it to try visually analyse it in detail you can see that the lines "loosing" curvature are less curved in the first place. To fully validate the illusion effect one needs to generate these image himself by using math to guarantee the shapes 2>

True, as there quite a lot of compression artefacts visible - still I could believe the effect still holds. - Must also be related to x being a fairly good approx to sin(x) for small x.

the ones that appear zig zagged are shaded in a way that implies flat faces with hard edges - the farther away you are the more the brain uses the lighting to infer their shape
-
it's just funny because anyone who's textured a low poly model knows you have to intuit this kind of thing a lot: overpower the real shape with the light painted on the shape to get across what you want

There's nothing new or strange about this effect... author claiming otherwise without showing proof feels like bs

Either this illusion is *really* good, or those waves aren't actually the same shape. Using a straight line for reference suggests the latterpic.twitter.com/ksnYNNz2WF

I was about to say "what illusion" and then I suddenly saw it
-
or rather, saw I'd been seeing *only* the illusion
