we need this kind of processing power for the aerodynamics of a cow

Did the computation generate more or less CO2 than the landing?
-
Pleiades has 241,108 cores and consumes 4.4MW, so a calculation on 1/50 of the cores for 1 million processor hours consumes 200 hours * 0.09 MW = 18MWh. The EPA says that's 13 tons of CO2. A 777-300ER only burns 7.5 tons of fuel per hour, though, so an actual landing is greener.

@chris_does_code - I wonder how long this would have taken to render this on my Amiga 1000? :D (answer: I could have started rendering in 1985, and it would still not be completed today!)Hvala. Twitter će to iskoristiti za poboljšanje vaše vremenske crte. PoništiPoništi

To within an order of magnitude, I think the simulated landing gear moving through simulated air might be using about the same amount of energy as moving the ACTUAL landing gear through actual air

Conclusion: pull in the landing gear.

Seems like massive overkill? It's a commercial plane with landing gear that's not going to see speeds over 200mph. Seems like if they had to simulate anything with the landing gear it would be related to the brakes and not the aerodynamics.

I've seen a lot of planes fly over my house but haven't heard any landing gear make noise that I can tell. Usually it's the engines
