true for current chemical rockets. Increase Diameter, you increase mass, thus increase earths gravitational pull. Following newton's third law, you are capped at the mass and velocity of the particles expelled from rocket - chemically not sufficient to reach escape velocity.

TFA considers the rocket equation, which describes how much fuel you need in order to reach escape velocity - with the known rocket propellants you'd have no chance to reach orbit.
