There's a similar technique called "ant-colony optimisation" that uses simulated ants laying pheromone trails to find near-optimal solutions to this kind of problem..

Yup. There have been several studies about such kind of animals' collective behaviors or molds' development patterns: they may contain precious solutions to complex problems we often ignore. I think this comes from our basic rejecting collective behaviors, as humans
