Around the time that the British Empire started ending slavery, did they discover they could make more money peddling opium? Not dismissing the one, but the other is important. History is messy. It's a losing argument to try to white knight any particular moment in time.

No one is white knighting. It's about providing historical context. Go back and read how hard the British debated at home, and therefore fought slavery abroad.
