Uh no, that’s not what happened. Taxation was levied as all governments levy taxation. Let’s face it, India under Indian rule isn’t doing such a great job of poverty alleviation.

There's just one flaw in your argument. They were not exactly normal taxes. They were some heavy taxes and most Indians under British masters barely had any FOE. The British Rule also caused multiple famines in India by diverting food back to Britain.
